Capitol Campus buildings to be without heat, hot water Saturday while repairs to steam heating system are made

Most buildings on the state Capitol Campus in Olympia will be without heat or hot water on Saturday, Dec. 17 from about 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. while the Department of Enterprise Services makes repairs to the steam heating system.

Enterprise Services will shut down the system, which serves 12 state office buildings, to repair a steam leak in the Employment Security Department building. The whole system must be shut down for repairs to be done safely.

Natural gas boilers at the central powerhouse on Capitol Campus make steam, which is distributed to all of the buildings via a pipe system. The steam system will be turned back on again immediately following the repair.

Office buildings served by the steam heating loop are:

  • Legislative Building (Capitol)
  • Temple of Justice
  • John A. Cherberg
  • John L. O’Brien
  • Insurance Building
  • Joel M. Pritchard Building
  • General Administration
  • Irving Newhouse Building
  • State Archives Building
  • Highways-Licenses Building
  • Employment Security Department
  • Office Building 2

The campus powerhouse, the building with the tall smokestack next to Capitol Lake, burns natural gas to produce steam for heating and hot water in most campus buildings.
