Capitol Lake/Lower Deschutes Watershed workgroup to review relative cost comparisons for management options at Sept. 30 meeting- 09/27/2016

Next community input meeting on Oct. 5

The Capitol Lake/Lower Deschutes Watershed executive workgroup will hold its next regular monthly meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 at the 1500 Jefferson Street building in Olympia.

The meeting topics include:

  • A review of the proposed final draft of the Purpose and Need Statement.
  • A second review of hybrid options and an overview of community input on the topic.
  • A discussion on the relative comparison of costs of various management options, with an overview of technical committee feedback.
  • A discussion about the transition from the current work — phase 1 — to what is recommended for a phase 2 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The Sept. 30 meeting agenda is posted on the Capitol Lake webpage.

After a review of previously discussed materials, the workgroup will receive a presentation showing a relative comparison of construction and maintenance cost factors of long-term Capitol Lake/Lower Deschutes Watershed management options. More detailed cost estimates would be developed as part of a future EIS.

One reason for the current work — referred to as phase 1 — is to prepare for a future EIS that would be completed, if funded by the 2017 Legislature, during phase 2.

The executive workgroup is made up of local and tribal government representatives. The 2015 Legislature directed Enterprise Services to make progress on reaching an agreement about the long-term management of Capitol Lake and lower Deschutes watershed. The department invited representatives from the Squaxin Island Tribe, cities of Olympia and Tumwater, Thurston County and the Port of Olympia to form a workgroup to assist the department with the legislative directive.

Community Input meeting

The next community input meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Presentation Room at the 1500 Jefferson Street building.

The meeting topics include:

  • A review and discussion of hybrid options.
  • A presentation and discussion about the relative range of costs for components of the long-term management options.
  • Discussion of the relationship between phase 1 and phase 2 and the transition from one into the next.

The Oct. 5 meeting agenda is posted on the Capitol Lake webpage.

The executive workgroup is currently seeking input from the community about their interest in receiving additional construction and maintenance cost estimates for other long-term management options, and support for completing an EIS.

Input can be provided by completing the online survey on the Capitol Lake webpage. The survey will be open until Oct. 6.

The 1500 Jefferson Street building is located between 14th Avenue SE and Maple Park Avenue SE in Olympia, just south of the roundabout. Get directions.
