Large crowd will affect parking, traffic on Capitol Campus

The annual Medal of Honor and Peace Officers Memorial ceremony will be held on May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Memorial, located north of the Temple of Justice on the hilltop above Heritage Park.

The ceremony honors law enforcement officers who gave their life or were injured in the line of duty, or who are being recognized for meritorious conduct.

Event organizers estimate that up to 500 people may attend the event, causing impacts to parking, traffic and the Dash shuttle route on the west Capitol Campus.

Ceremony set-up begins around 6 p.m. on May 1 requiring the closure of the roadway behind the Temple of Justice. In addition, the north and south diagonals will be closed from about 6 p.m. on May 1 until about 3 p.m. May 2.

Other May 2 road closures, from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., include:

• Cherry Lane from the flag circle north to Water Street
• The section of Water Street near the campus greenhouses
• The section of 11th Avenue in front of the General Administration Building up to Columbia Street

State employees and others who park in the Governor's Mansion parking lot must use the flag circle or go on the south side of the Legislative Building for accessible routes during the road closures.

The hillside switchback trail, below the Law Enforcement Memorial, will be closed during the ceremony.

The Dash shuttle will continue to make stops on the west campus throughout the day but will be re-routed from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m., using the traffic circle by the Winged Victory Monument as a temporary turnaround.

There will be a 21-gun salute during the ceremony and practice salutes behind the General Administration Building earlier in the day.
