Crew to pull ivy from Centennial Park starting Jan. 27

A six-person crew that has been working to remove invasive plants on a section of the hillside above Heritage will move to the grounds of Centennial Park during the last week of January.

The crew is with Puget SoundCorps, which is part of the Washington Conservation Corps program administered by the state Department of Ecology. The Washington Conservation Corps is affiliated with the federal AmeriCorps program.

The crew will continue their work to remove ivy and other invasive plants, helping to enhance public safety and improve the health of native species and trees. Centennial Park, next to Union Avenue between Washington and Franklin streets in Olympia, is plagued by a smothering carpet of ivy. The work will set the stage for re-planting with native undergrowth.

The SoundCorps crew will focus on uprooting and removing ivy, Himalayan blackberry, holly and Portuguese laurel.
