Earth Day event features partnerships, highlights of Enterprise Services offerings

Enterprise Services invites you to an agency Earth Day event on April 24 to check out the newest hybrid vehicles, see what odd and useful things Surplus Operations has for sale and learn more about a variety of services that help protect Washington's environment.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 1500 Jefferson Street Building. The Enterprise Services gathering is in conjunction with the second-annual Earth Day Recycle Fair organized by Wright Runstad, the building owner.

Lemay Pacific Disposal and Shredding, Puget Sound Energy, Thurston County Solid Waste and the City of Olympia will also share information about their green services and resources.

Enterprise Services provides central-support services to state government. Its contributions to protecting the environment are prominent among the variety of "green" services, including:

  • Development of "green" building construction standards that have resulted in 53 LEED-certified public facilities throughout Washington.
  • A 99 percent reuse and recycling rate of surplus materials from state agencies that keeps hundreds of thousands of pounds of material annually from winding up in landfills. This also generates millions of dollars in surplus sales to the public.
  • Long-term use of hybrid fleet vehicles that boost fuel use and cut pollution emissions by up to 90 percent. These include the Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius, and Ford C-Max, all of which will be on display during the event.
  • Energy projects that save millions of dollars and keep hundreds of tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. The most recent is the installation of energy-efficient, LED lighting fixtures in all Capitol Campus parking garages.
  • A Capitol Campus composting program that has diverted more than 800 tons of food and other organic waste from landfills, routing it instead to a commercial composting facility, where it is converted into a landscape product.
  • A partnership that refurbishes electronic equipment for use in public schools throughout the state, including an upcoming donation to the Yelm School District in Thurston County.
  • A 100 percent recycled paper contract that saves thousands of trees and millions of gallons of water.
  • Printing practices that focus on recycling all wastepaper, cardboard, used printing plates and spent toner cartridges.

Visitors to the event are encouraged to use the Intercity Transit Dash shuttle, which runs every 12 minutes between the Capitol Campus and Farmers Market and stops directly in front of the 1500 Jefferson Building.
