Capitol Campus Update

OLYMPIA — The war memorials on the Capitol Campus receive regular maintenance throughout the year, but these commemorative works of art get special attention just before Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

The Enterprise Services grounds crew use plain water and natural bristle brushes to gently scrub away bird droppings and other dirt, blow away leaves, tidy up landscape beds, check light fixtures and more.

After the holidays, the crew will gather the dozens of items left behind at the memorials, such as medals, pictures, letters and more. So many items have been left behind over the years that the state in 1988 developed a policy on their display and removal. The policy is based on the one used by the National Park Service for items left at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Two Veterans Day events are scheduled for the Capitol Campus on Nov. 11. The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs website lists Veterans Day events taking place throughout the state on Nov. 10-12.
