Gun rights rally could draw 400 to Capitol grounds Jan. 19

Up to 400 people could participate in a Sunday, Jan. 19 rally on the west Capitol Campus to express their opposition to further firearms regulations.

Enterprise Services, which manages public events and activities at the capitol grounds, issued the permit to the group Washington State Guns Across America.

The group's self-described "Stand Your Ground" rally is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. near the Tivoli Fountain.

Many participants are expected to openly carry firearms, as is allowed under state law. There is no prohibition against carrying weapons on capitol grounds.

Enterprise Services contracts with the Washington State Patrol for security at the Capitol Campus. The State Patrol will have troopers on duty, as usual, during the event.

The State Patrol advises anyone who perceives a threat on the capitol grounds at any time to call 9-1-1.

Event organizers will begin setting up at about 9 a.m. and post-rally cleanup will continue until about 5 p.m.
