March 4 event could bring more than 1,000 to Heritage Park

The Department of Enterprise Services has issued a permit for a Saturday, March 4, event that organizers say could bring up to 1,000 attendees to Heritage Park on the state Capitol Campus in Olympia.

The Spirit of America rally will take place in the park from noon to 3 p.m. Similar rallies are planned in multiple U.S. locations on March 4.

In addition to the rally, information has come to light that an unknown number of protesters who are not associated with the rally also may come to the Capitol Campus on Saturday.

It is expected that some people might openly carry firearms, as allowed under state law. There is no prohibition against openly carrying guns in the public spaces of the Legislative Building or on the grounds of the state Capitol Campus in Olympia – including Centennial, Heritage, Marathon and Sylvester parks.

As with many large campus events, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) will have troopers and Enterprise Services will have event managers on duty during the rally to ensure that all sides have the opportunity to legally exercise their free speech rights and peaceably assemble.

WSP advises anyone who perceives a threat on the Capitol grounds at any time to call 9-1-1.
