Parking Services Alert

Parking rate informational meeting June 7, 11:30-1:30

What?

A third public informational meeting will be held Wednesday, June 7, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the OB2 Auditorium. The OB2 auditorium is located on the East Campus across Capitol Way from the Legislative Building. The address is 1115 Washington St. SE and the auditorium is on the lower level of the building.

The meeting will include:

  • A short presentation followed by a question and answer session
  • Additional time to speak one-on-one with DES staff
  • Parkers can also submit written comments during this time

If you are unable to attend the meeting but wish to share your feedback about the rate increases, please:

Who?

Both employees and visitors who park on the Capitol Campus will see a parking rate increase. Unions were notified on March 16 and three demands to bargains have been scheduled in May.

When?

DES plans to implement the increase July 1, 2017. Parking stalls generally fall within one of four designations shown below. Rate changes for other parking types are available on the DES Parking Services Website.

Rate changes for other parking types

Why?

DES is required by law to establish parking fees for the Capitol Campus. When considering raising parking fees, DES compares our rates against local parking rates to ensure our proposed fees do not exceed and are typically well below the local market rate of a comparable privately owned parking as outlined in RCW 46.08.172.

The Capitol Campus parking fund is currently operating at a deficit. Parking rates have not been increased in nearly 10 years. By increasing rates, DES will be able to recoup actual costs for the parking line of business, which is required by SAAM 80.20.35b. The fees are used to pay costs incurred in the operation, maintenance, regulation, and enforcement of vehicle parking and parking facilities, and help support capital investment costs.
