Power shut off in west campus buildings, including Capitol, on Sept. 7

On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Department of Enterprise Services will oversee a temporary electrical shut off to most buildings on the west Capitol Campus.

The scheduled power outage will begin at about 7 a.m. and end around 5 p.m. and is being done to support the repair and replacement of aging utility infrastructure beneath Sid Snyder Avenue. The utility project started in August and closed Sid Snyder Avenue from Capitol Way to Cherry Lane near the Legislative Building. The project is expected to continue into November.

The temporary power outage will affect the following buildings:

  • Cherberg
  • Conservatory (greenhouse)
  • Insurance
  • Governor’s Mansion
  • Legislative (Capitol)
  • Newhouse
  • O'Brien
  • Pritchard
  • Temple of Justice
  • Visitor Center

Back-up power in the buildings will run key functions, such as fire alarms and emergency systems; however, elevators, lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems will not be fully functional during the outage.

The Capitol Building will be closed to the public all day Sept. 7.

The outage also will affect the traffic signal at 14th Avenue (Sid Snyder) and Capitol Way. Flaggers will be at the intersection to direct traffic during the outage.

Tivoli Fountain will be shut down this coming Sunday as well.

The project will require additional weekend electrical outages in the near future, and interruptions to water service. The dates of those outages, and other details, will be coming soon.
