Sid Snyder Avenue reopens to public

Crews work on completing final touches

The Department of Enterprise Services (DES) has reopened Sid Snyder Avenue to the public, providing direct access from the intersection of 14th Avenue S.E. and Capitol Way to the state Legislative Building.

Repairing the roadway and replacing numerous underground utilities in the area have kept the main entrance to the Capitol Campus closed for four months. The $1.9 million project began in August.

While the street is now open for traffic and Intercity Transit's Dash service has returned, crews will continue putting final touches on the improvements.

Since some revisions to normal traffic patterns are in place, the public is encouraged to exercise caution when using the new street.

Some of the final work on the project includes planting new trees along each side of Sid Snyder Avenue and installing landscaping to match the original plans for the campus from the 1920s.

The new vegetation is also part of a new stormwater management system designed to filter and reduce polluted surface water runoff from reaching local storm drains.

In addition, new sidewalks and transit stops will encourage walking and riding the bus for the thousands of people who visit the Capitol Campus annually.

Enterprise Services maintains the state's Capitol Campus, which covers more than 486 acres, and includes four parks and the 260-acre Capitol Lake.
