Traffic alert: Campus road lane closure Jan. 18

On Saturday, Jan. 18, one lane of Sid Snyder Avenue, a road on the west Capitol Campus, will be closed so a contractor can take soil samples from underneath the pavement.

Enterprise Services initiated the project which will also shut down some nearby parking stalls.

Work is expected to start about 8 a.m. and conclude by 5 p.m.

A flagger will be on site to help manage traffic in the work zone.

The contractor will use a trailer-mounted rig to drill holes in three locations along the road, causing noise throughout the day. The contractor will also use an excavator to dig two discovery pits near the curb in front of the Irv Newhouse Building to expose underground utilities.

Saturday's work is part of a larger project that begins this summer to replace underground utilities and pipes beneath the road. Some of the existing underground water lines are more than 80 years old.

The work on Saturday will help with the development of a detailed schedule for the summer project, which will require a full closure of Sid Snyder from Capitol Way to Cherry Lane.
