Weekend vandalism closes Heritage Park restroom

OLYMPIA – The permanent restrooms at Heritage Park on the state Capitol Campus are closed following two days of vandalism. A portable bathroom will be open 24 hours a day at the park while repairs are made.

Vandals broke the bathroom doors the night of Saturday, Jan. 21. Department of Enterprise Services staff temporarily secured the doors with boards, but sometime during the night of Sunday, Jan. 22, vandals tore the boards from the doors.

The restrooms will remain closed until the doors can be replaced. The Washington State Patrol is investigating the incidents.

The vandalism came a day after Enterprise Services announced a pilot project to keep a portable restroom and hand washing station open at Heritage Park during nighttime hours to provide 24-hour public restroom access at the state park.

Under the pilot, the park’s regular bathrooms will to stay open during park hours with the portable restroom and cleaning station open during non-park hours.

Enterprise Services does not have the funding to keep the regular park bathrooms open 24 hours a day. The agency is collaborating with the city of Olympia and other stakeholders to seek a collaborative, workable solution to address concerns about access to open public restrooms during nighttime hours in the Olympia area.

Enterprise Services does not yet have a time frame for the repairs but is working to expedite the work.
