Long Distance Supervision (1/2 Day) - Virtual or In-person

01-09-M639

In today’s complex world, managers increasingly face the challenge of supervising people who do not work nearby. This challenge may be the result of people working at a remote location, telecommuting, or working different hours than the supervisor does. In this workshop, participants will learn skills in supervising people who are separated from their managers. In long-distance situations, employees need to work independently and proactively. In this workshop, participants will learn how to get people to act in this way, and will learn how to insure that the tasks employees assign themselves are the right ones. Participants will learn how to overcome the obstacles that result from the long-distance situation. These challenges can be grouped into three main areas:

  • Communication takes more effort and is less efficient;
  • Employees may not feel they are part of the team and follow their own agendas;
  • It is harder to insure that what people do is in line with what is desired.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

  • Find systems to counteract miscommunication in long-distance supervisory relationships
  • Avoid the “Us vs. Them” mentality
  • Motivate people to take action at long distance
  • Keep things under control without controlling things
  • Use technology to overcome barriers

Competencies covered in this course: Leadership Development
