Capitol Campus garage lighting project results in energy savings

A recently completed campus garage lighting project will save enough electricity per year to power the equivalent of about 150 Northwest homes and will improve safety for state employees and visitors to the Capitol Campus. In addition, the state will receive an energy conservation grant of $650,853 from Puget Sound Energy. The grant money will be used to help pay off the Certificate of Participation financing for the project. This project, completed by Enterprise Services in partnership with McKinstry Co. and Puget Sound Energy, included replacing existing lighting in all Capitol Campus parking garages and the 14th Avenue tunnel with new energy-efficient, white-light LED fixtures and installing occupancy sensors that dim the lights in unoccupied areas. The project began in September 2012 and was completed in June 2013. Prior to this project, the lighting in Capitol Campus parking garages consumed a large amount of energy, about 2.4 million kilowatt-hours annually, and cast low levels of yellow-colored light that are not as effective as white light for viewing details at low light levels. The new lighting is expected to reduce energy consumption by nearly 1.8 million kilowatt-hours per year.
