DES supports the Governor's Initiative on Hiring Veterans

On May 9 and 10, the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) teamed with Employment Security (ESD), Veterans Affairs (DVA) and the Office of the State HR Director to provide refresher sessions on veterans preference law, and the resources available to help veterans in their re-entry to civilian employment.

More than 90 representatives from Washington State public employers attended the event. Mark Sullivan of the Office of the State HR Director was pleased with the turnout. He said, "All of the invited public employers were represented."

The event, which supported the Governor's Initiative on Hiring Veterans, was provided in half-day sessions providing four separate opportunities for attendees. It took place in the State Training Center at the 1500 Jefferson Building in Olympia.

Included in the program:

  • DES sessions on "Veterans Preference" (laws and guidelines) and "Applying Veterans Preference" (in the online recruiting system)
  • DVA sessions on "The Advantages of Hiring Veterans" and "DVA Programs and Services"
  • ESD sessions on "The Veteran's Journey" and "ESD/Worksource Programs and Services"
