Washington state employers are legally obligated to provide a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. This means ensuring that the workplace is free from any hazards that could potentially cause serious bodily harm or death. As such, it is crucial for supervisors and human resources (HR) partners to understand their roles and responsibilities in maintaining a safe working environment.

This class focuses on defining workplace violence and fostering awareness of domestic violence as it relates to the workplace. We will explore strategies for handling threatening, controlling, or disruptive behavior that comes to work. We will conduct hazard assessments and analyze various scenarios to determine whether and how to respond, and discover what resources are available.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legal obligations when responding to a workplace violence or domestic violence situation.
  • Define workplace violence.
  • Describe the latest case law on workplace violence.
  • Assess threatening workplace situations and handle them effectively.
  • Balance customer service, safety, and security needs.
  • Apply workplace violence avoidance strategies to a variety of work situations.
  • Appropriately address domestic violence when it becomes a workplace issue.
