This course equips you with a comprehensive understanding of your role in lawful and effective hiring practices. Throughout the course, you will learn a range of interview and hiring techniques, including what information can be legally obtained from applicants and the appropriate interview questions to ask. Real-life case studies will be used to illustrate how to objectively approach human resource issues such as background checks and reference checks, focusing on achieving desired outcomes. By the end of the course, you will gain a clearer understanding of the parameters and flexibility of the new Washington state civil service rules.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify job-related skills and attributes unique to the open position.
  • Post job announcements to attract candidates with the highest potential for success.
  • Design interview questions to illuminate the best candidate.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what interview questions may and may not be asked and why.
  • Properly engage with candidates with disabilities.
  • Set expectations for everyone involved to ensure a legal and effective hiring process.
  • Communicate appropriately with all candidate’s post-selection.
