April 2 ceremony honors state recipients of Medal of Honor

The Washington Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting a public ceremony to honor three Washington citizens who are the most recent recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, at 11 a.m., April 2 in the Capitol Rotunda.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy A. Petry, Army Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter and Army Capt. William D. Swenson earned the Medal of Honor for their extraordinary courage during "Operation Enduring Freedom," the official federal government name for the war in Afghanistan.

They will be joined at the ceremony by at least two of the four other Medal of Honor recipients from Washington.

The event will include a 21-gun salute.

Gov. Jay Inslee will be joined by Maj. Gen. Terry Ferrell, the commanding general of the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord as the keynote speakers.

The 56th I Corps Army Band brass quintet and the I Corps Color Guard will be participating, and the event's Master of Ceremonies will be Department of Veterans Affairs Director Lourdes E. Alvarado-Ramos.

The names of Petry, Carter and Swenson will be unveiled at the Washington State Medal of Honor Monument on the Capitol Campus following the indoor ceremony, bringing the total of names on the monument to 91 and the total of living recipients in our state to seven.
