Campus tree trimming and removal Jan. 8-10

A tree care company will be on the Capitol Campus and other nearby state properties Jan. 8-10 to prune hazardous limbs and remove non-native species.

Arbor Care Tree Service of Astoria, Ore., will prune two tulip trees growing near the southeast corner of the Temple of Justice. While both trees are in good health, the company will remove some dead branches and large healthy ones overhanging a sidewalk.

The company will remove three black locust trees from the hillside below the General Administration Building. The tree is native to southeast United States, but is an invasive species in Washington.

The fast-growing deciduous tree can out-compete native plants and create shaded "islands" with little ground vegetation, potentially making steep slopes less stable.

Arbor Care will also prune a large tulip tree on the Columbia Street side of the State Capital Museum and Outreach Center, which is located a few blocks south of the Capitol Campus. The pruning work will improve the shape of the tree and reduce the risk of falling branches. The work may require some brief traffic impacts and the use of loud chipping machines.
