Localized Flooding Near Capitol Lake Possible Thursday, January 19

As the weather changes from prolonged freezing conditions to increased rain, the Department of Enterprise Services and City of Olympia are preparing to respond to potential flooding in areas near Capitol Lake, including Heritage Park, on the morning of Thursday, January 19.

Large volumes of runoff entering the Deschutes River basin are entering Capitol Lake. Enterprise Services has been actively managing lake levels, but due to the large volume of runoff there may be localized flooding around Capitol Lake between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. due to high tides in Budd Inlet.

City and Enterprise Services staff are taking steps to respond including staging materials, such as sandbags, in the area.

Officials are asking citizens to be careful as they commute and do business around the lake. If you witness flooding near Capitol Lake on Thursday, operations staff encourage you to proceed carefully and contact City of Olympia Public Works Dispatch at (360) 753-8333.
